Team Diabetes: WE WILL EMPOWER YOU

Did you know that there are currently over 10 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes?

If you were to walk into a hospital today, among the people being treated for a stroke, 30 percent have diabetes. Of those being treated for a heart attack, 40 percent have diabetes. Of the people experiencing kidney failure requiring dialysis, 50 percent have diabetes.

Of those who need non-traumatic limb amputation, 70 percent have diabetes. Nearly one-third of those people will die within the following year; two-thirds within five years. The death rate is higher than almost all types of cancer.

Diabetes is also a leading cause of vision loss and blindness.

This is the health impact of diabetes in terms of some of the most significant health problems experienced by those living with this disease.

Not many people realize the true impact of diabetes in our communities even though most of us know a friend or family member affected by it. That’s why Team Diabetes exists; we are passionate about making a difference in the lives of Canadians affected by diabetes. We are equally passionate about spreading awareness so that Canadians will realize the full impact of diabetes in our country.

In 2016, Team Diabetes will be participating in over 25 events across Canada from 5k walks to marathons and Tough Mudders. We will be walking and running in PEI, Vancouver and everywhere in between, so that we can raise our Team Diabetes flag to spread awareness from coast to coast! And we don’t stop there. At the Canadian Diabetes Association, we are committed to getting Canadians active. This means we will be raising our flag in Australia, Iceland, Ireland and Jamaica, and if that’s not enough, this year we will be embarking on an epic adventure, cycling 500 km across the spectacular Mekong Delta from Vietnam to Cambodia.

In 2016, as you set out with brand new goals and aspirations, allow Team Diabetes to motivate you. Allow us to inspire you, and most importantly, allow us to EMPOWER YOU. This could be the year that you walk your first 5k, or run your first full marathon. This could be the year that you check off that bucket list item with the chance to ride through the ancient temples of South East Asia, or perhaps conquer your first Tough Mudder.

The funds raised by our dedicated Team Diabetes participants go towards programs like camps for children living with Type 1 diabetes, educational outreach services, self-management programs and advocacy efforts to secure proper pharmaceutical care for Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. At our organization we like to inspire participants, giving them the opportunity to overcome their barriers to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. We have a distance and destination for everyone no matter what their fitness level and hope to get as many people active as possible along the way. Whether it’s a national event like the BMO Vancouver Marathon, or an international event like the Reykjavik Marathon in Iceland, we have something for everyone.

By joining a local event like the 2016 BMO Vancouver Marathon, Team Diabetes Participants will receive:

  • Guaranteed race registration (we will cover your registration fees)
  • Official Team Diabetes tech shirt or jersey
  • Fundraising tools and support
  • Free electronic monthly newsletters
  • Travel fundraising tiers available to those coming from out of province

Already registered and would like to participate as part of our team? No problem! If you raise the minimum goal of $350 we will reimburse your race fees!
