Chevron Canada Limited Announced as Presenting Sponsor of the New 2015 Neighbourhood Challenge
Showcasing the unique qualities of the 12 neighbourhoods within the BMO Vancouver Marathon and fostering a sense of community are key goals for Chevron
Vancouver, BC – January 28, 2015 – The beauty of the BMO Vancouver Marathon is unparalleled. Recognized by Forbes and CNN for its scenic views, the event will now attract thousands of fans to the streets of Vancouver as a part of the new 2015 BMO Vancouver Marathon Neighbourhood Challenge program presented by Chevron. With cash prizes and bragging rights, the program will recognize neighbourhoods that create the most exciting experience on May 3, 2015.
“We are very excited to support the BMO Vancouver Marathon this year,” says Adrien Bryne, spokesperson for Chevron. “Showcasing the unique qualities of these 12 Vancouver neighbourhoods, while bringing together the City’s communities in the spirit of sport and celebration, is important to Chevron and the 18,000 runners participating in the BMO Vancouver Marathon.”
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Chevron to foster this Neighbourhood Challenge program,” says Charlene Krepiakevich, Executive Director of the Vancouver International Marathon Society. “The great marathons of the world have thousands of spectators lining the streets. Vancouverites have shown their passion for sport; they believe that sport matters, that sport inspires, and that sport can be celebrated. This new initiative encourages locals to get out on race day and cheer on runners.”
Through the event, the Neighbourhood Challenge will honour community groups who demonstrate spirit and enthusiasm on race day, May 3, 2015. In order to compete, neighbourhoods must submit photos using social media, or email [email protected] on race day.
With a total prize amount of $7,000, the Neighbourhood Challenge presented by Chevron will award the top neighbourhood with a $1,500 prize. This neighbourhood will be chosen based on the largest number of spectators that come out on race day to cheer, show spirit, and find creative ways to showcase what makes their neighbourhood special.
In addition, five prizes will be awarded in each category:
• Best Decorated Station/House/business – two $500 awards
• Best Group/Team costume – three $500 awards
• Best Cheer/Dance routine – two $500 awards
• Best UBC student group, team, faculty or department cheering in UBC – two $500
• Best High School, College or University team – two $500
Neighbourhood groups are required to meet criteria in order to be eligible for the awards. This includes creatively representing the neighbourhood, providing a safe environment for spectators, runners, volunteers and officials, a fun and memorable experience for runners and demonstrating spirit and enthusiasm at the event. Category winners will be chosen by the Vancouver International Marathon Society, the non-profit organization responsible for the event.
