Embrace life with the children and families of Canuck Place
Canuck Place Children’s Hospice opened its doors in 1995 as the first free-standing children’s hospice in North America and is British Columbia’s recognized pediatric palliative care provider, delivering care to over 500 children and families facing life-threatening illnesses across the province.
It is often assumed that Canuck Place’s main area of service is end-of-life care. Reynaldo and Melanie Hernandez, parents to five-year-old Mason, thought just that – “Mason was born with a brain stem abnormality and Moebius syndrome, an extremely rare congenital neurological disorder,” Reynaldo explains. “We thought we could take care of Mason ourselves, but after meeting with the team at Canuck Place, we learned that they offer respite, pain and symptom management, and recreation therapy. We were accepted for respite, and that’s proven to be a huge help.”
Through all stages of a child’s illness, every area of service provided by Canuck Place is designed to meet the needs of each family at no cost to them. “Canuck Place guides us through all of Mason’s care,” Reynaldo says. “Everything from care plans to medication to getting his vitals filled out at hospitals so that all his information is on-hand in case of an emergency. They’re a sounding board for advice.”
Perhaps most importantly, Canuck Place has allowed this family to be just that – a family that spends time together and experiences different things together, while forgetting about illness, even if it’s just for a little while. “Canuck Place has given us the opportunity to enjoy time with Mason,” says Reynaldo. “It’s also let Mason just be a kid, instead of a kid with special needs. As a father, I often think, ‘Am I doing enough? Am I doing everything I can for him?’ Canuck Place has given us that. It’s allowed us to be parents and to be a family.”
