Vancouver’s only marathon is 85% sold-out
Local non-profit experiences high-demand in all six races
Vancouver, BC – March 1, 2016 –
Regarded as one of the most beautiful marathon courses in the world, the BMO Vancouver Marathon on May 1, 2016, is already 85% sold. With thousands of local and destination runners already committed, the event organizer – the non-profit Vancouver International Marathon Society – is predicting another sell-out year.
“Vancouver is a runner’s paradise, especially in the spring,” says Charlene Krepiakevich, Executive Director of the non-profit Vancouver International Marathon Society. “We are very proud to bring our community together and showcase our beautiful city by offering six different races along with an exciting free three-day Health, Sports & Lifestyle Expo.”
Recently ranked a top destination marathon by Forbes for the third time since 2012, the BMO Vancouver Marathon kicks off the running season in the spring and offers runners the best of Vancouver with views of snow-capped mountains, cherry blossoms, beautiful beaches and stunning parks as they conquer the annual event.
Demand for the marathon has been strong for several years and 2016 is a special year with the marathon celebrating its 45th year. “There are very few marathons in the world that have this history and legacy. It is a special year with special celebrations and runners are excited,” comments Krepiakevich. “The weekend also offers shorter races for athletes of all abilities.”
On Saturday, April 30, kids can participate in a fun 2.5KM run in Stanley Park with the same perks as the adults – medals, bibs, food, and celebrations. In addition, a new 2.5KM Walk is offered to promote active lifestyles for people of all ages.
On Sunday, May 1, 2016, the city then welcomes Vancouver’s only Marathon, and the BC Half Marathon Championships on separate point-to-point courses. Runners also have the opportunity to experience a leg of the marathon with the Marathon Relay, or 8KM through Stanley Park. There are races for everyone.
“We encourage everyone to find a race to participate in. With so many options this year, there’s something for everyone!” Krepiakevich added.
Runners are asked to join in now, as registration numbers are higher than at this time last year. Included in race registration are Saucony technical t-shirts, medals, a complimentary Stanley Park Beer valid at Mahony & Sons, and an exciting downtown Finish Line Street Festival with music, food, and more.
“There’s really something for everybody,” adds John Stanton, CEO of the Running Room, in an interview on CTV Morning Live. “Even if it’s somebody who’s sitting at home saying ‘I could never do that’, come out and be one of the 4,000 volunteers, cause you’ll be inspired! Maybe the next year you’ll take it up.”
