Help Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School continue to change the lives of students with learning differences

Vancouver, BC – April 9, 2022

Statistics show that students with learning challenges, who do not receive the support that they need, have a higher risk of dropping out of school, adult suicide, and homelessness.

There is a huge impact on a child’s life and emotional wellbeing when they experience low self-esteem and struggle due to their learning differences. When these students first walk through the doors of Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School, their confidence is low and they truly believe that they are not capable of having a successful future due to the way they learn. KGMS is a place they can come to be safe and experience a positive, life changing educational opportunity that will lead them to reach their full potential.

KGMS is a non-profit organization (Charitable registration #: 1195-4555-RR0001) located in North Vancouver that supports K-12 students with complex learning differences. Our specialized program offers students small academic classes with personalized instruction, one-on-one Orton-Gillingham tutoring, a focus on hands-on learning, and social-emotional support.

During these uncertain times, our community of students and their families are in need of support now more than ever. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to go towards Student Financial Aid.

KGMS supports students like 12-year-old Madison, who has high functioning autism and ADHD. Madison was labelled as un-teachable due to her learning differences, and was being bullied and picked on.

“It wore on Madison because she knew she didn’t learn the way that others did. She would hide her pain from us because she knew I was burning out. That was when KGMS was mentioned to us,” said Diane and Steve, Madison’s parents.

After coming to KGMS, Madison found academic and personal success, and her family finally found the relief they needed.

“Now we get to see Madison grow academically, and finally see her smile. We couldn’t have asked for a better, loving, caring school. When Madison gets on the school bus, we are at peace. We know she will be OK, and will meet her full potential,” said Madison’s parents. “Madison now has a future, and we have hope that she will go to college or university. We didn’t have that before. She has become a well-rounded, happy little girl. KGMS changed Madison’s life, and saved our family.

The cost of operating a unique program like ours is high. We have the lowest student to teacher ratio in BC, and the tuition is a financial stretch for many of our families, but their children are no less deserving of a supportive, engaging learning environment that celebrates who they are, and how they best learn.

By donating to Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School, you are:

  • Supporting the value of education, inclusion and fairness: your donation will provide equitable access for children who learn differently. By donating, you help us continue to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for our K-12 students

  • Supporting a healthier family life: KGMS assists and eases the heartache and stress that school struggles bring home. We provide in-school OG tutoring and the support and guidance that many families must seek outside of a traditional school environment.

  • Honouring the KGMS teachers, tutors, counsellors, and support staff who have made a difference in a child’s life, and for the essential work they do every day. You are helping a child understand that they are capable and deserving of a bright future.

A child needs to be taught in the way they learn best. Every gift makes an impact, no matter the size. With your help, we can continue to set up all children who have learning challenges with a bright future.
