A Story of Hope, Strength and Courage

Vancouver, BC – March 27, 2014

Introducing Shaelyn, an Honoured Hero

Honoured Heroes are dedicated individuals, patients or survivors of blood cancer, who provide inspiration to Team In Training participants, volunteers and staff. Honoured Heroes share their strength, courage and motivation and provide much needed encouragement. In return they are Sean & Shaelynwelcomed into a community of individuals fighting for a cure, providing hope to those affected by blood cancer.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) would like to introduce six year old Shaelyn Martin from Richmond, BC who is an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia survivor and beloved Team In Training honoured hero.

Born Sept 3rd, 2007 Shaelyn appeared to be a very healthy and content baby. Just two months into her young life, a simple check up at BC Children’s Hospital, doctors informed us she had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Life as her family knew it was instantly changed and Shaelyn started a yearlong treatment process. At first, doctors told her parents she was so young and the treatment was so intensive, the odds of survival were stacked against her. The majority of her first year of life was spent in the hospital.

Shaelyn battled through uncomfortable side effects but as time went on she started to show signs of improvement. Her family had every reason to believe she had beaten the odds and was fully cured. They felt confident that her toughest days were behind her.

During her one year post treatment checkup her parents learned Shaelyn’s Leukemia had returned. Her treatment needed to start immediately and they once again adjusted back to life at the hospital. Doctors felt the best chance for recovery was a bone marrow transplant. Her family were very blessed that the doctors found several donors considered a perfect match. Shaelyn was very fortunate to have a speedy recovery. Just over six weeks after her transplant, her parents were allowed to take her home. Today, Shaelyn has grown strong and is a very happy and healthy six year old, full of energy and laughter.

Please join Team in Training as they cross the finish line and move closer to finding a cure for blood cancer at the BMO Vancouver Marathon weekend on May 4. Run, jog or walk distances ranging from 10k to 42.2k for our Honoured Hero-Shaelyn.
