Canuck Place: Helping Children be Children this Holiday Season

At Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH), we make a difference for BC’s children and families. We provide critical care for children with life-threatening illnesses in our two provincial locations and in their home communities, empowering them to celebrate each moment,

build precious memories and manage the pain and symptoms of their illnesses and conditions. We also support the families who love them and provide the tools and resources they need to live in the moment together.

As British Columbia’s recognized pediatric palliative care provider, we play an important role in the health care system. Not only do we provide end-of-life care, but we work with families throughout the entire span of a child’s life from the point of diagnosis through the progression of the illness. From grief and loss counselling services including music and play therapy, recreation therapy, art and education to the much needed family and child respite, and 24-hour clinical care, Canuck Place is an integral partner in the journey of these children and families.

At Canuck Place, it’s about the little things

  • It’s about providing nourishing meals to families when they need it most – including freshly baked cookies.
  • It’s the relief a mum feels after sleeping through the night for the first time knowing her daughter was being looked after by a specialized clinical team.
  • It’s the afternoon of shopping for a teenage girl in a wheelchair with her mother – being well medicated for pain, she was able to shop for new clothes so she could feel pretty. When she died a week later from cancer at the hospice, the memory of this experience was important for the family.
  • It’s the opportunity for parents with their ill 7-month old son to be in a swimming pool for his and their comfort, despite his fragile condition.
  • It’s our receptionist managing almost a hundred people over 4 days, mostly teenagers, coming in to say good-bye to their 18-year old friend, just days before she died.
  • It’s about one of our volunteers this summer having fun with the children making baking soda and vinegar volcanoes in the garden. Kids just want to be kids in the hospice.
  • It’s the young philanthropist who baked and sold holiday treats to raise funds to buy gift cards for the children on our program. She thoughtfully picked out a variety of experiences families could share together and create special memories.

Organizations like the BMO Vancouver Marathon help Canuck Place Children’s Hospice take care of the details – both big and small. For the over 560 children with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them, Canuck Place is there for them and looking after the details in their care. And we are working hard to be there for the approximately 75% of children in BC we are not currently reaching. With your help, we can get there. Your donation to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice ensures that high-quality pediatric palliative care continues to be delivered to the BC community – and so kids and their families can create moments that will be cherished for years to come.
