RUNVAN Ambassador Richard MacLachlan

Vancouver, BC – March 7, 2014

Meet Richard, a new runner with big dreams

More than just long-term runners of the BMO Vancouver Marathon, RUNVAN Community Ambassadors are leaders in Vancouver who embody the Vancouver International Marathon Society’s mission, vision, and values. Elite and recreational runners, business leaders, or local heroes, these superstars find joy in motivating and inspiring others through running. They’re also comfortable with public speaking and tend to be regulars at our running events throughout the year.

Richard MacLachlan started running two years ago. Since then he’s completed numerous 10 k races, 13 half marathons, 2 marathons, and one Ironman Canada competition.

Seems like a lot in a short amount of time, doesn’t it? Richard loved racing as soon as he started. Racing, says Richard, gives him an outlet for his competitive spirit, as well as requires him to set and achieve demanding goals–something he enjoys. Like most runners, Richard enjoys the experience of challenging himself both physically and mentally to see what he’s capable of accomplishing.

Richard is always considering new challenges that will test his will and determination. Presently, he’s thinking about trying an ultra marathon distance. He also has several more races planned for this year, including the BMO Vancouver Marathon in May.

RUNVAN: Take us back to the first time you ran in the Vancouver Marathon or Half Marathon. What was it like? How long ago was it? What do you think has changed since then?

Richard: The first time that I ran the BMO Half Marathon was in 2012, and I had only just started running one month earlier. I found out about the Half Marathon after completing a 10 km race three weeks prior. After I finished, I was walking around and I saw a flyer for the BMO Vancouver Half Marathon event and I remember thinking to myself, “Hmm, that’s three weeks from now, but no problem; it’s only twice the distance of what I just did. Easy peasy.”

RV: Name a few of your favourite points along our new course. Why do they stand out for you?

RM: I love Camosun Hill. It’s a nice challenge, and the speed of the downhill slope beside Spanish Banks afterwards is great. I also like running over Burrard Bridge into the city, passing by second beach and the swimming pool, and knowing that the rest of the course is a scenic homestretch, a breeze. And, of course, running up Pender Street into the Finish Line chute.

RV: Aside from our event, where’s your favourite spot to run and why? Or, tell us about your favourite local running route or trail.

RM: Victoria Marathon was a very scenic race along the waterfront, and I loved running along the trails and beside Green Lake while up in Whistler, BC during Ironman Canada.

RV: What is your pre-race routine? Runners would love to hear about your favorite meal to have the night before a race, your superstitious habits, or even your warm-up routine.

RM:

Night before: pasta with pesto, sourdough bread and skim milk.

Morning of (about 3 hours before): Oatmeal, two bananas, and skim milk.

During the race: lots (I mean lots!) of Powerbar Gels – about one every 15 Minutes. Also, water!

RV: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a parent, coach, or mentor about running? Or, got your own advice? Share it here, too.

I always say, “Run your own race.”

But, that said, I have a bad habit of starting-off too fast. If you’re looking for a PR/PB like I am, it’s just too hard to make up the time in the last 5-6 km.

Finally, have fun and smile for the photographers!
