BC CANCER FOUNDATION: HELPING CHANGE THE OUTCOME FOR BC FAMILIES FACING CANCER

New research has projected that one in two people in our province will face a cancer diagnosis at some point in their life. This means that there is an urgent need to develop more effective strategies to reduce the prevalence of and improve treatment outcomes for this disease.

As the fundraising partner of BC Cancer and the largest funder of cancer research in the province, the BC Cancer Foundation works to change the outcome for those facing cancer by connecting personalized care and innovative research with opportunities to give back. Every dollar raised stays right here in BC to advance research, enhance care and break down cancer for the benefit of people across our province.

Generous support from our donors has enabled BC Cancer researchers to make breakthroughs that have revolutionized how cancer is viewed and treated on a global scale, improving the lives of countless patients and families who have faced this disease across BC and beyond.

Almost exclusively funded by donors to the BC Cancer Foundation, findings from BC Cancer’s world-renown Personalized Onco-Genomics program, for example, have led to the development of life-saving therapies for late-stage cancer patients while radically improving our understanding of what causes cancer growth through whole genome analysis.

Langley resident Zuri Scrivens, a patient of the program, began her cancer journey in 2011 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 months after giving birth to her first child. While initial treatments appeared to work, Zuri’s late-stage breast cancer quickly returned, spreading to her liver and lymph nodes.

The POG team scoured research, data, and discoveries to find a drug that might block that particular growth factor. Zuri began taking that drug commonly used to treat diabetes, along with standard hormone treatment, and responded well to the new protocol. Four months later, her cancer was undetectable.

Zuri’s story is but one example of the power of philanthropy to advance research that will improve the lives of those facing cancer in our province through research.

With incredible leaps in science and technology coupled with generous donor support, BC Cancer continues to break new ground in genomics, immunology and nuclear medicine, in addition to enhancing care at BC Cancer’s six centres across the province.

Funds raised at this year’s BMO Vancouver Marathon RUN4HOPE help support the next wave of treatment options and enhancement initiatives, providing new hope to families across our province facing this disease.
