Legacy Talks

The ‘Legacy Talks’ video series interviews those who have played key roles in helping grow the event from its early beginnings in 1972.

Don Basham

“That very first year we only had 32 participants in the event, two of which were women… Over the course of the seven years that we ran this course in Stanley Park, we were up to well over 700 (runners) when we finally decided to move the event out of the Park.” – Don Basham

Dr. Jack Taunton

“I didn’t have a club to run in, so some of the people that I raced with – I talked to them – and six of us started the very first road running club in Canada… Then, out of that, we started the Vancouver Marathon.” – Dr. Jack Taunton

John Stanton: “It was voted one of the top marathons in the world, part of it is because of the scenery, the beauty and the weather… For the runners, in particular for those people who are visiting Vancouver, it’s a thrill! I can tell you that runners that come from Western Canada, or the US, or Europe come to Vancouver to run the Marathon, and they’re overwhelmed with the beauty of the city.”

“There’s really something for everybody. Even if it’s somebody who’s sitting at home saying ‘I could never do that’, come out and be one of the 4,000 volunteers, cause you’ll be inspired! Maybe the next year you’ll take it up.”

Brent Shearer: “I’m doing the half this year, so I better get training!”
