DONOR SUPPORT CHANGES PATIENT OUTCOMES
As the fundraising partner of BC Cancer, every dollar at the BC Cancer Foundation stays right here in B.C. to advance research and enhance care for people across our province.
Thanks to the generous support of BC Cancer Foundation donors, cutting-edge research, precision treatment discoveries, and enhancements to care have already changed the outcome for many people impacted by the disease.
People like Jesse, who knows firsthand the experience of facing a cancer diagnosis. Multiple times.
In December 2000, Jesse booked an appointment with his doctor for what he thought were swollen glands. At the time, he was wrapping up a teaching practicum for his first degree in a fifth grade classroom and was convinced the flu his students had been passing around for the better part of two months was to blame.
However, what he thought were swollen glands turned out to actually be a grapefruit sized tumor and a cyst attached to his thyroid. It wasn’t long after this discovery that Jesse received his first cancer diagnosis.
Little did he know, that was only the beginning of his relationship with the disease. As of today, Jesse has been diagnosed five times with two different types of cancer. He has undergone five surgeries, 39 rounds of radiation and completed a radioactive iodine treatment.
“I am happy and healthy and live with a chronic condition that shouldn’t affect my longevity of life as long as the cancer keeps presenting the way it has in the past,” Jesse says.
This year, Jesse has decided to join RUN4HOPE and raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation. On May 5, 2019 he will be running the BMO Vancouver Marathon and fundraising for the cause.
“I want to show my gratitude for the excellent care I received and to support further research in hopes that others will have the same outcomes I’ve had,” he says.
Jesse’s story is just one example of how the generosity of BC Cancer Foundation donors is changing the outcome for the one in two British Columbians who will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.
The progress is real. Together, BC CAN break down cancer.
